The Vision Behind Yi King Business

Yi King Business was born from a deep conviction: entrepreneurs and business leaders deserve access to ancient wisdom adapted to the challenges of the modern business world. This unique decision-making framework transforms the timeless principles of the I Ching into a powerful strategic tool for navigating today’s entrepreneurial uncertainty.

What is the I Ching?

The I Ching, also spelled Yi Jing and often translated as The Book of Changes, is one of the foundational texts of Chinese culture. Originally a manual of divination, it evolved over the centuries into a major philosophical work, influencing schools of thought such as Confucianism and Taoism.

The I Ching is composed of 64 hexagrams, each made up of six lines that can be solid (Yang) or broken (Yin). These hexagrams are traditionally obtained through divination methods and interpreted to provide insights and guidance for specific situations.

Beyond its divinatory use, the I Ching is seen as a symbolic map of the processes of change and universal dynamics. It offers a perspective on how opposing and complementary forces interact to shape reality.

Origins and History of the Yi King

Ancient Roots

The I Ching traces its origin to ancient China, traditionally attributed to the mythical Emperor Fu Xi, who is said to have lived between 3,500 and 7,000 years ago. Fu Xi observed nature and universal cycles, creating the eight trigrams (Ba Gua) that represent fundamental forces of existence.

Development under the Zhou Dynasty

The trigram system was expanded under the Zhou dynasty (c. 1046–256 BCE). King Wen of Zhou combined the trigrams into the 64 hexagrams, and his son, the Duke of Zhou, further refined and structured them, reinforcing their symbolic and practical coherence.

Confucian and Taoist Interpretations

Over time, the I Ching was enriched by various schools of thought. Confucius (551–479 BCE) and his disciples added philosophical commentaries known as the Ten Wings, embedding the text in the Confucian tradition.

Meanwhile, Taoism embraced the I Ching as a means of understanding universal harmony and natural cycles.

Introduction to the West and Modern Influence

The Yi King was introduced to the West in the 17th century, but it gained broader recognition in the 20th century, notably through the work of Richard Wilhelm and Carl Jung. Jung viewed it as an expression of the principle of synchronicity.

Structure and Core Principles of the I Ching

Yin and Yang: Universal Polarity and the Dynamics of Change

The concept of Yin (☷) and Yang (☰) lies at the heart of the I Ching. These two opposing yet complementary forces represent the duality that governs the universe:

  • Yin (⚋): feminine, receptive, dark, fluid, passive. Associated with the moon, water, winter, and the earth.

  • Yang (⚊): masculine, active, luminous, rising. Linked to the sun, fire, summer, and the sky.

Yin and Yang are not static but constantly interacting. Every situation contains both forces, and their balance is ever-evolving.

Trigrams and Hexagrams: The Codes of Change

Trigrams are the fundamental elements of the I Ching, each composed of three lines (Yin or Yang), representing a force of nature or a universal archetype. These eight trigrams combine to form the 64 hexagrams, which reflect the archetypes of all possible situations.

A hexagram, made from two stacked trigrams, symbolizes a specific moment, an energetic configuration, and a potential evolution.

The I Ching and Jung’s Concept of Synchronicity

Carl Gustav Jung, the Swiss psychiatrist, viewed the Yi King not as a fixed tool of prediction, but as a way to engage with the present moment and the seeker’s consciousness. He described its use as a method to access unconscious information through what he called synchronicity.

Synchronicity refers to meaningful coincidences between internal states and external events, without a direct causal link. According to Jung, the hexagram obtained during consultation is not mere chance but a symbolic reflection of the inner state of the seeker and their situation.

Jung also linked the I Ching to his theory of archetypes—universal patterns within the collective unconscious. He saw the hexagrams as symbolic expressions of fundamental human experiences.
